Supports and encourages opportunities for disabled people to participate in sports, at regional, national and international levels. Sports are offered through a network of Regional Parafed Associations, National disabled & able-bodied Sports Organisations, clubs, coaches and individuals.

 

Achilles New Zealand

Achilles is a worldwide organisation that gives people with disabilities an opportunity to participate in mainstream events like Round the Bays, giving them the opportunity to participate with able-bodied athletes. 

 

Adaptive Snow Sports

Adaptive Snow Sports through Snow Sports New Zealand (SSNZ) helps to remove participation barriers and encourages people with functional impairments to get involved in snow sports.

 

Amputee Golf

Golf is one of the most popular sports enjoyed by amputees of all ages, levels of amputation and functional abilities. Few recreational activities encourage people to get outside, compete within their comfort level, and enjoy social exchange with friends the way golf does. Interestingly, golf is also one of the most beneficial activities for improving balance, coordination, range of motion, strength and endurance. In many ways, golf is the perfect rehabilitation therapy.

 

Mountain Bike Amputee

MTB Amputee includes pictures and information on a variety of amputee mountain bikers and cyclists, encouraging ALL amputee cyclists to participate regardless of age, gender, race, nationality, ability, or disability.

 

NZ Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled caters for people of all ages. They may be referred by therapists, doctors, specialists, other health professionals, teachers, caregivers and referrals from parents and riders themselves. Our Riders attend riding to achieve a specific goal, whether it is therapeutic, educational or sporting.

 

Sailability New Zealand

Sailability is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based organisation which, through the activity of sailing, enriches the lives of people with any type of disability, the elderly, the financially and socially disadvantaged. There are several regional clubs listed on the Yachting NZ website.

 

International Links

International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO) - Belgium

New Zealand has a national member society for the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics (ISPO), to which the New Zealand Artificial Limb Service and many of its staff belong. ISPO holds regular scientific meetings and produces a quarterly journal to enable members to keep up to date with new developments in prosthetics and orthotics.

The AustPAR website provides information, education, and peer support for physiotherapists, and all health professionals who work with amputees. It covers an array of topics around amputee care and has discussion forums, presentations and useful resources for healthcare providers.

 

Limbs 4 Life - Australia

Limbs 4 Life is the vision of Melissa Noonan and Jacinta Dyson who recognised that amputees needed an organisation that provided up-to-date information and formalised peer support.
